The 'Accidental' Murders
By A Customer
This is one of Christie's delightful books which later came on TV as the popular 'Why didn't they ask Evans?' It features the amateur detectives Bobby and Frankie, the latter known to the world as the most unlikely Lady Francis Derwent. She's the daughter of an earl, and this rather fortunate circumstance gets the lady an entry into houses where the more plebian Bobby can enter only as a chaffeur.
'Why didn't they ask Evans?' A handsome stranger with a photo of a hauntingly beautiful girl in his pocket, falls off a cliffside and dies with these rather mysterious words even as Bobby stands guard over him while his friend goes for help. The woman who turns up as the original of that photo, a heavily made-up, rather coarse woman, makes Bobby wonder at the cruelty of age that can destroy such beauty, till he realises that this is a different woman and that the photo has been changed. Things begin happening soon after that. An attempt on Bobby's life makes the gutsy, thirsting for-excitement Frankie suspicious and together they decide to get to the bottom of this mystery. By staging a mock-accident themselves, Frankie tries to get "a line on" the main culprit only to find herself succumbing to the charm of this young man who soon becomes more of a friend than enemy. When Bobby suddenly comes upon the original of the photograph in the grounds of an asylum, things start getting real warm. Written with the usual Christie elan, The Boomerang Clue has twists and turns on almost every page and keeps you hooked till the perplexing riddle is solved, which is probably not saying very much, since most Christies are unutdownable anyway. A very satisfying read, with more than one murder, and an ambience that threatens many more. Despite the crime and the suspense, the plucky humour of Frankie, though often at Bobby's expense, keeps the novel from getting too dark.

Readers Are Led On Merry Chase In Light-Hearted Adventure
By Antoinette Klein
Agatha Christie gives us a pair of her most likeable amateur sleuths in Bobby Jones, the son of a vicar in a small Welsh village, and Lady Frances Derwent, his childhood friend and now companion in crime-solving. The story is frivolous and funny thanks in large part to the wit of Lady Frances, but you will find the usual murder, villains, and high adventure in this melodramatic tale.
While golfing one afternoon, Bobby and the local doctor find a man who has apparently fallen over a cliff. The victim dies, but his last words are "Why didn't they ask Evans?" A verdict of accidental death ensues, but when Bobby is suddenly offered a high-paying job in Argentina and later someone attempts to poison his beer, he begins to suspect that someone wants him out of the way for fear of what he knows. Bobby cannot figure out what he knows, but with the help of Lady Frances he is off on a trail of clues involving a suspicious doctor, a sanitarium for the highly nervous, two beautiful ladies-in-distress, drugs, and murder.
If you like light-hearted mystery with plenty of adventure, you'll enjoy being led on this merry chase with likeable sleuths. It's too bad Agatha Christie chose not to bring Bobby and Frances back in later books. Perhaps, she thought they were too much like Tommy and Tuppence.

A TWISTING, CURLING TALE OF SUSPENSE
By A Customer
The ability to be inncocent and yet a murderer...
Take this statement into consideration while reading the book. The fact that most people can't consider a nice, innocent, politically correct person evil is the big stumbling block of the novel.
I think that Christie's biggest asset in writing successful mysteries is her ability to create amazing red herrings. It is the red herring that the unsuspecting reader bites into and won't let go until the gentle and ingenious Christie pries it out with her rock-hard proof of who the real murderer is.
It is proved once again that the red herring can work in this novel. It all starts with innocence...then leads up to contemplation, suspicion, and proof. You will find out evidence as the protagonists do and feel the excitement as they stake out undercover the suspect/s. So don't be deceived by appearances. Like in most cases, the people that seem flawless and wonderfully caring turn out to be a little different. Reader, beware! Nothing is how it looks.
Enjoy, Holli Burke PhD.
