About the Author
Jenni Ogden, Ph.D., FRSNZ, FNZPS, worked as a university professor, researcher and practitioner in the fields of clinical psychology and neuropsychology for 27 years. She is author of the popular book, Trouble In Mind: Stories From A Neuropsychologist's Casebook, and now lives with her husband on a remote island off the coast of New Zealand and writes nonfiction, and fiction with a psychological or medical theme.

I wish she had more books out there!

Ms. Ogden's writing has a touch of Oliver Sacks-like quality. Not only does she describe each patient's clinical assessment in terms of scores on neuropsychological testing batteries, but she also describes the processes by which the patients cope with their medical problems and how they affect their lives. The patients are seen as human beings overcoming difficulties, rather than anonymous cases. A great book for those interested in clinical neuropsychology. This book was also be very useful as a text book, as it describes medically what's happening to each patient as well as how it affects them behaviorally on neuropsychological testing and socially in their everyday lives.

Interesting and very informative

For several years, I have used this book for an undergraduate class I teach on Neuropsychology. The chapters, which each focus on a distinct type of brain damage or disorder, are well written and a relatively easy read. They also do an excellent job of covering the science of what causes each type of damage and why the damage impacts behavior the way that it does. My students seem to really enjoy each chapter and Ogden's discussion of her patients stimulate a great deal of discussion in class. I find Ogden's coverage to be more comprehensive and detailed than Oliver Sacks but she is certainly no less interesting to read.

This is a great read

Dr. Ogden brings to life the case study approach. She writes well, clear and is informative. She gives us basic definitions in neurology and spells them out clearly; the difference between alexia and dyslexia, for example. She focuses on the machinery at the neurologists disposal and the testing battery of the neuropsychologist. She tells how each person tends to be one minute normal, the next, no so. She follows closely how something like neurotoxicity develops, a people cope with neurological illness and follows them in treatment. The book is full of learning material. I highly recommend it to the practicing psychologist or neuropsychologist, or someone curious about how the brain functions.

About the Author
Mark Davies is Professor of Engineering Science, Head of the Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering Department, and Founder Director of the Stokes Research Institute at the University of Limerick in Ireland. He was a Rolls-Royce research scholar at Cambridge University, earning his Ph.D. with a thesis on aircraft engine blade flutter. From there he went to Oxford University to research gas turbine heat transfer. His present research interests range from entropy generation in turbomachinery to electronic system reliability.

A one-stop source for Aerospace Engineers

I bought this handbook when I entered the aerospace industry and I continue to be amazed at how much useful information it has for the engineering professional. I work with a variety of aircraft systems and the summary chapter on those topics is excellent. Now since this is a handbook it is by definition a high level look at the various topics of interest. But there are a myriad of details included that will help you understand how all aspects of an aircraft or spacecraft work together and how those vehicles interact with their environment. I recommend this book to anyone in the field.

A Great New Cookbook

Straight Up Tasty is the new cookbook written by Adam Richman, of Man vs. Food fame. If you never saw the show before, it was a show that featured Adam traveling around and trying to conquer the biggest or more unique food challenges he could find. While the show is no longer on the air, Adam still loves food and it shows with his new cookbook.

Adam begins by stating that he is not a chef - but he knows and loves food. For that reason, he decided to write a cookbook with recipes he cooks at home or has developed that were inspired by his travels. These recipes are down to earth with ingredients that all kitchens have - or can easily find. That's the kind of cookbook I enjoy!

The cookbook has recipes for breakfast, lunch, snacks and small plates, dinner, side dishes and condiments, and of course, sweets. I have a long list of recipes I want to try from all of the sections, but the first up ones are these.

Both his recipes for Lemon Ricotta Pancakes and Oatmeal Pancakes sound simple and delicious. I love the idea of Tortilla Soup with Guacamole Wontons! Brilliant. Along similar lines, his recipe for Creamy Tomato Soup with Grilled Cheese Sandwich Dumplings sounds like a winner for winter nights.

Straight Up Tasty is the perfect combination of straight forward recipes, enticing pictures, and short stories that explain how and why these recipes came about. If you're looking for a cookbook written by someone who truly loves good food, check out Adam's new cookbook. I'm sure you'll find a new favorite or two!

Something for everyone in a fun format.

I have to be honest, prior to reading this book I had never heard of Adam Richman. Not that this is particularly a bad thing. I came to this book with no preconceived notions as to who he was, what he cooked, or where he had been. In short, a pair of fresh eyes looked at this book and liked what they saw.

Adam Richman is a traveling TV foodie who offers up an quite an eclectic collection of culinary delights in "Straight Up Tasty: Meals, Memories, and Mouthfuls from My Travels." This book features over 100 unique recipes that are a combination of favorites from his family and friends as well as regional and international favorites from his travel experiences from around the world. According to Richman this book is a "road map to great eating." It is also a heck of a lot of fun. With the look and appeal of a personal scrapbook, each recipe contains notes and reminisces on the food as well as interesting facts.

I loved the section on "Leftover Holiday Candy" recipes. Who has not found themselves in a spot like this, trying desperately to avoid just diving into the candy and polishing it all off in one swoop? The recipes in this section offer tasty ways to pace yourself while slowly eliminating that excess chocolate baggage.

With recipes to suit all tastes and budgets, some of the offerings include: Bacon and Cheddar Frittata, Creamy Tomato Soup with Grilled-Cheese Sandwich Dumplings, Chili-Frito Sloppy Jose with Sliced Avocado and Crunch Pickled Onions, Wild Mushroom Tart, Salted Caramel Candy Apple Tarts, and Oh, Hell Yes Cheesecake (and who does not love that name?)

This is a well-organized cookbook with large, colorful photos, and written in a conversational tonal. While everyone will easily find something to love here, if you are looking for a gift for your favorite man who loves to cook, he will certainly enjoy this one.

My Thoughts:

I Love that fact that with Straight up Tasty I get the best of both worlds a Travel guide of sorts as well as a Cookbook. Reading this book was so very simple an recipes are easy to read an follow with many pictures. Adam Richman had me sold from the Introduction let me tell you I was reading and answering his questions like Yes Thats me. I have tried a few of the recipes in this book an I have to say yes I do have a few favorites like Baked Gouda with Sun-Dried Tomato Pesto and Tortilla Soup with Guacamole Wontons to name only a few. I highly recommend Straight up Tasty if your looking for awesome new recipes to try and share with your love ones.

About the Author
Thomas J. Hickey is the Dean of the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences and a Professor of Government at the State University of New York (SUNY Cobleskill). He received his bachelor’s degree from Providence College, M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Sam Houston State University, and a law degree from the University of Oregon, School of Law. His areas of expertise include criminology and law and he is the author of two books, Criminal Procedure (McGraw-Hill, Inc., 2001, 1998) and Taking Sides: Clashing Views in Criminal Justice (McGraw-Hill, 2007) as well as many journal articles. He is a licensed attorney as well who specializes in the areas of labor law and tort litigation.
