Quand le grondement lointain de l’explosion parvint dans sa cellule, Axel tressaillit. Allongé sur sa paillasse, les yeux fixés sur l’ampoule jaunie qui pendait au plafond, il n’avait pas imaginé l’entendre depuis cette pièce étroite percée d’un minuscule soupirail. Mais le calme de la nuit avait porté le bruit funèbre jusqu’à lui.
Que pouvait-il espérer après un tel massacre ? Il en savait trop et il était seul. D’un moment à l’autre, on allait venir le tuer, lui aussi.
Il se redressa avec lenteur, posa les pieds au sol et se mit debout. La sueur perlait à son front. La chaleur étouffante se mêlait à sa peur et au remords de n’avoir pas écouté Audrey avant qu’il ne s’engage dans ce projet. Elle en avait senti d’instinct toute la folie, mais il était resté sourd à ses appréhensions.
Des éclats de voix se firent soudain entendre au travers de la porte rouillée dont il avait éprouvé la résistance quelques heures plus tôt. L’ordre d’en finir avec lui venait déjà d’arriver…
