Ereshkigal reveals to Longinus that the terrifying demoness, Lamashtu, is intent on opening the seven gates of the underworld and letting the dead spew forth across the land. She asks him to become her champion and save the people of Babylon. Longinus, smitten by her beauty and the justness of her cause, agrees.

To restore order to the cosmos, he must confront Lilith, the Queen of the Night, and free Lamashtu’s horrifying, demon nemesis - Pazuzu, the Dark Angel of the Four Winds. However, he must first defeat Lamashtu’s servants, the powerful, vampire necromancers and sorcerers – the Blood Priests of Akkad.

Can Longinus; Arwia, the High Priestess; Bashaa, the dashing, young captain of the King’s Guard; Belteshazzar (Daniel), the wise man; and Queen Amytis save Babylon from destruction?

The answers are written in the stars, and only the gods can tell.

Armed with the Spear of Destiny, mounted on his Arabian stallion, Safanad, and accompanied by Urbarra, an old grey wolf, Longinus must ride forth into battle.

The omens are propitious for a Babylonian adventure of biblical proportions as Longinus fights desperately to complete his quest and save his friends.

The Adventure of Longinus Continues

Yet another book by the gifted Author, Alan Kinross, who has been under the radar working on his third novel. I have read the previous books in the series but I have to say this one has been the best. Everything is smartly put together.

In this novel, Longinus gets to prove that he is indeed a hero. A man of the people. Through thick and thin he fights all the obstacles and evils that surround him and comes out as the savior, sent to save Babylon.

Unlike the previous books where there is a lot of horror and bloody fights, this is a neatly crafted novel that focuses a lot more on romance and adventure. Through fresh new characters (Bashaa and Arwia), we see their struggles as the tradition and culture of acient Babylon, try to hinder them from being together. But somehow fate pulls them together.

All characters in the novel are well developed and the environment in which events take place is awesomely described. You don’t have to be too imaginative to get the picture that the author is trying to portray. Another thing I liked the humor that is throughout the novel, especially with characters like Hunzuu. :-)

The struggle for power between the gods is maintained throughout the novel and you really do not know what to expect. Lots of suspence and unxepected turn of events that keep the novel interesting. Did I mention Longinus time travels? Another amazing feature. :-)

I am now left wondering what the author has in store for us in the future. I can’t get enough of this series of novels.
Definitely my best buy of the year!

Such an amazing series

I am a fan of all things vampire but author Alan Kinross has really taken things to an entirely different level with his "Longinus The Vampire" series. While you could read this latest book as a standalone, I have no idea why you'd want to as the entire series is simply outstanding. This mix of vampire lore, adventure, and high fantasy is beyond original and the writing is some of the best that I've come across this year. Longinus isn't your typical vampire here. He is definitely a hero and the circumstances presented in the story make him easy to get behind in his quest to save Babylon. There are some surprising elements to the story that make this a page-turner with some unexpected twists, and it is probably a series that I will be re-reading in the near future. It's that good. Definitely recommend this one.

We are all so busy trying to make the most out of each and everyday that it goes without saying that we miss out on so much in the process.

In the book EXPAND THIS MOMENT, author John Selby invites us to stop and take a moment to enjoy the greatness that is life, the right now. I found this to be a timely read seeing that I am guilty of trying to cram as much as I can within one 24 hour period. Though that is not going to stop overnight, it is important for us to realize the importance of the moment and not take it for granted.

Through messages and meditations that have been shown to work, the author reminds us to think of what is truly important and not allow the anxiety of tomorrow stop us from actually living and enjoying the thing we call life.

Written in a manner that is sure to encourage and inspire, EXPAND THIS MOMENT is just what a growing world needs to make sense of who we are and what is important.

Perhaps the most valuable meditation-related title I've ever read

Over the years I've read a lot about books that address meditation, but this title features the best and most practical discussion about that subject I've ever come across. There's also a lot of really great life advice in this work, plus the author's conversational, down-to-earth writing style is very engaging. Mr. Selby clearly comes across as a very authentic spiritual teacher whose heart is obviously in a very loving space. As such, I highly recommend "Expand This Moment" as a spiritual growth resource.

thought I knew it all

I have learned dozens of methods of meditations, simple to the very complex and always find the problem is getting into a routine of actuallly doing the meditation so it's a habit.
This book starts off like "nothing new" then, about page 46 I realize, "Wow". This is simple, makes sense and doable. I agree with his technique and philosophy backing it up.

Within the framework provided by the chronicles and by monument archaeology, Smith (Architectural Research of Aztec-Period Rural Sites in Morelos, Mexico, Vol. 1, Univ. of Pittsburgh, 1992) summarizes the results of archaeological research conducted largely in the past 30 years into the everyday lives of ordinary people in the villages, hamlets, and farmsteads from many regions of central Mexico. His method permits a fresh view of such topics as agricultural methods, population size, market system, relations between city-states and the empire, and even human sacrifice. Smith carries his social account of these people through transformation under Spanish rule and their legacy in modern Mexico. Excellent Overview

This is an excellent summary book on Aztec civilization. Well organized and written clearly, this book is distinguished from prior overviews by its integration of archaelogical information that has permitted some understanding of the life of the majority of Aztec commoners. Smith covers Aztec history, the physical and ecological basis of their society, agriculture and economy, art and religion, and the organization of Aztec polities. The book is illustrated well. This is definitely the best single book I have read on this topic and has an excellent bibliography for those wishing to pursue the literature in depth. This book is part of the Peoples of America series published by Blackwell. I've read another book in this series, The Incas by D'Altroy, which is first rate. The publishers deserve a pat on the back for producing this highly informative series.

A very readable introduction to the Aztecs

I'm an engineer, not a historian or archeologist, yet I very much enjoyed this book. It didn't get boring, and made learning about the life of the Aztecs interesting. It was scholarly yet accessible.

This book is keen!!!

I've read a few books on Aztecs and this one is somewhat unique in that in addition to using textual sources, it gives a good deal of focus to the archaeolgical record as well. This perspective gives a fuller view of Aztec society as a whole, and illuminates the lives of commoners as well as those of nobles. This perspective, along with Smith's expertly and well written explanation of the Archaeology behind this perspective is fascinating. That is why this book is so keen. Also the pics are pretty nifty as well.

Another Ron Rhodes masterpieces

Another Ron Rhodes masterpieces. Ron Rhodes is a fantastic Bible Scholar who I've listened to on KTIS radio two hours a month on "Live the Promise". He's an exceptional scholar and his books are filled with information and answers.

Not really for arguing with Atheists and Skeptics

A well written book aimed at Christians. The title intrigued me, so I bought the book.

I'm sorry, but the objections the author talks about are not really points atheists bring up. The arguments presented wouldn't change an atheist's or skeptics mind either.

Other reviews go more into specific examples of this.

The book is written to make the reader feel armed with intelligent arguments in favor of Christian beliefs. I think it serves that purpose well.

But talk to a real critical thinker? Every argument presented is easily picked apart. I will say this though, in Bible studies? The author has some insights to add.

But trying to convince a scientist that his science is wrong? These aren't the methods. And no critical thinker I know would bring up the "Objections" that the author answers. Lots of straw man objections that are easily overcome using no logic at all.

But for the aright audience? Convincing.

Objections Sustained

The purpose of this book is not really to convince atheists, agnostics and sceptics to become Christians. Rather, the purpose is to explain to Christians what bad people atheists are. In other words, the books is defensive in character, not offensive. The author often charicatures the atheist position. Often, he starts quoting the Bible as proof, even before he reaches the point where he ostensibly proves the Bible. No well-grounded atheist will be convinced by this book, nor is that the intention. The authors' point is to preach to the choir, hopefully keeping them in check.

Going through every argument would be tedious, so I stick to the main methodological flaws in the book.

First, Rhodes places heavy emphasis on a kind of philosophical paradoxes, such as "The claim that everything is relative is itself absolute and hence self-refuting" or "The claim that only the empirically verifiable is true cannot be empirically verified itself, and is hence false". He even mentions something called "the kalam argument", apparently a Muslim version of Zeno's Paradox. I'm not a philosopher, so perhaps that's why I am singularly unimpressed! Even if this or that statement is paradoxical according to some criterion of formal logic, so what? Zeno's Paradox isn't taken seriously by anyone. Empirically verifiable claims are still more certain than non-verifiable ones. And if everything is in constant flux ("relative"), pointing this out "absolutely" doesn't make it any less true. Perhaps the authors intended audience at some evangelical Bible seminary in Texas are impressed by these arguments. Well, I'm not. Besides, even Ron Rhodes accepts empirical verifiability when it suits his purposes. He attempts to prove the Bible by appeals to archeology and claims that Intelligent Design is...well, empirically verifiable. As for the truth being relative, atheists do *not* say that truth is relative. For instance, atheists are reasonably sure that God doesn't exist, that Darwin was right, and that a Bronze Age document decreeing genocide (a.k.a the Book of Joshua) contradicts modern principles of morality.

I already pointed out that the book isn't really intended for an atheist audience, which may explain why some of Rhodes arguments strikes the sceptical reader as very odd. For instance, he asserts that Peter cannot have lied about the Resurrection, since he was trained since childhood in the Ten Commandments, which prohibits false witness! Come again? A sceptic might point out that Peter may have been mistaken, that the Resurrection stories may have been embellished by later tradition, or that he may indeed have been - dare I say it - lying. New religions are founded as we speak, they can be studied by scholars, and often their origins are an amazing melange of subjectively honest spiritual experiences, half-truths due to politic, and out-right lies. Why should we believe that Christianity was any different?

But the main problem with the book is that it's methodologically disingenious. In one chapter, Rhodes uses the Big Bang to "prove" that God exists. BUT IN A FOOTNOTE HE ADMITS OF BEING A YOUNG EARTH CREATIONIST!!! He therefore doesn't believe in the Big Bang himself!!!

How can a non-believer in an old universe and the Big Bang nevertheless concoct a chapter using the Big Bang as an apologetic tool? Personal dishonesty may be one explanation, but I think the rabbit hole goes deeper. I come across this problem in other "fundamentalist" texts as well. A real classic in this field is "When Critics Ask" by Norman Geisler and Thomas Howe, a book that can be paraphrased thus: "The Bible is absolutely free from errors and contradictions, because it says so. If the Bible contradicts modern science, either modern science is wrong, or the Bible has been misunderstood. Either way, the Bible is right. The solution to Bible contradiction X is either Y, or maybe Z, or maybe Y and Z combined. No matter what, the Bible is true. And if we cannot explain away something, just blame it on scribal error. After all, only the original manuscripts were inspired". (If you don't believe me, please obtain this book for yourself. It's very funny.)

The problem, clearly, is this. Rhodes have already made up his mind about the Bible being inerrant in all its (original?) paragraphs. He reached that conclusion WITHOUT the help of apologetics. Presumably he reached it for some kind of psychological or sociological reasons. Only then, AFTER his conversion, did he started to look around for apologetical arguments. He found the Big Bang here, some philosophical paradoxes there, and decided to use it. In the end, the veracity of each tool, taken by itself, doesn't really matter, since he already "knows" that the Bible is correct. And this approach is not peculiar to Rhodes himself, but typical of the fundamentalist approach in general. I found it in Norman Geisler, publications by the ICR and Answers in Genesis, etc.

But it's precisely this method, this dogmatism, that smacks "atheists, agnostics, and sceptics" as a very bad answer to their objections.

I wrote this during my atheist-materialist period. Today I'm more into dualism, deism and such ideas. When I recently looked through Rhodes' book again, I realized that it's *even worse* than indicated in my review. For that reason, the review stays.

About the Author

Dan Tow is an independent consultant, operating under the banner SingingSQL (www.singingsql.com). His experience solving Oracle-related performance problems goes all the way back to his 1989 hire by Oracle Corporation. During most of his tenure at Oracle, Dan focused on the performance of Oracle Applications, managing the performance group for that division. In this role, he found a fertile testing ground for his SQL tuning method applied to the huge set of complex SQL included in those applications, including both online SQL and diverse batch processes. In 1998, Dan left Oracle to lead performance for TenFold Corporation, where he applied the same methods to tuning questions on DB2, and SQL Server, and Sybase, as well as on Oracle. In 2002, Dan started his own business, SingingSQL, through which he offers diverse database-related tuning services, including SQL tuning and systematically analyzing load to learn which SQL should be tuned. He has introduced his SQL tuning method to over 1,000 people in short lectures, and now offers in-depth courses in the material, using this book as textbook. Dan has a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He lives in Palo Alto, California, and can be reached at dantow@singingsql.com.

This Old Dog learned a new trick

Like Dan, I have been doing Oracle for a long time (since 1984). I offer three opinions about Dan's book:

1) learning how to do query diagrams is great for people who have never done them and this book is the best (maybe even the only) book for learning this. In learning to do the diagrams, you will understand the basic logic and basic math that an optimizer must do in order to get you a good plan. Do not worry. It is not a deep math book and there are no complex calculations. Indeed Dan shows you how basic it all really is. This gives you a deeper foundation in optimization and brings you closer to having that INFORMATIONAL CRITICAL MASS which is required to do good tuning.

2) the book is outdated. As I said, I have been doing Oracle since 1984. For two decades, Dan's method of tuning and relying mostly on NESTED LOOP JOIN was the only real game in town. And Dan explains it well. Unfortunately about the time Dan published the book (2003), Oracle was entering a revolution in its design. Most notably, databases were increasing in size dramatically and this made the need for PARTITIONING strategies and PARTITION WISE HASH JOINS very high. Dan's techniques of query diagraming are still useful for understanding a query's needs, but the book is today outdated because of its lack of treatement for PARTITIONING and HASH JOIN techniques. Don't get me wrong, even outdated, this book has great value because it clarifies what you need to tell other people, why certain things happened.

3) Even outdated, I learned one neat join trick which alone is worth the 20 dollars I paid for this book. Page 146 has a gem of a trick that I never considered but which I can see as offering massive benefits in a few special situations which I have faced in the past but could not solve. Thanks Dan. It is even easier to do in today's 10g and 11g databases because you need no hints to make it happen.

This brings me to my last commentary. The reason I say the book is outdated is because Oracle has come so far in the last five years with its optimizer that the trick to getting Oracle to give you the right plan is to feed it good information. If you do this then it will do what Dan shows you in this book (only better than you could) and give you a great if not best plan. Thus you will rarely build a query diagram these days. Instead you will try to figure out where information was not provided to Oracle correctly and fix that. If this turns out not to be the case, then the problem is likely because the SQL is crappy and you need to rewrite it. I would say that given the right information (stats collected right, constraints created for PK,UK,FK, indexes built to support the constraints, datatypes correct for columns, not null defined when data is actually required), Oracle will produce a great or best plan 99% of the time. The other 1% of the time you will 99% of the time be doing SQL rewrites. That leaves 1/100th of 1% of queries to be a real problem. Many times your system won't be that complicated.

Not being an expert in DB2 or Sql Server I cannot say how up-to-date the material remains on these databases but since I doubt their Optimizer Technology is as advanced as Oracle's there may yet be significant value retained in these two spaces. I can say that it is true that Dan's diagramming methods are universal for any database and that reading the book will provide you with that boost towards critical mass I mentioned earlier regardless of what database you use.

If you are an Oracle Developer/DBA and you are new to tuning, or want to see what you know and don't know, you can't go wrong by getting this book. After reading the book, start reading about PARTITIONING and PARTITION WISE HASH JOINS. Understanding what is in this book and understanding the details of PARTITIONING and PARTITION WISE HASH JOINS in various scenarios will put you at the forefront of tuners. Maybe its time for Dan to do an updated version of the book.

One last comment. I don't want this to seem like a negative review. Remember I said I have been doing Oracle since 1984. As "expert" as I am with Oracle and in tuning it (I am a reasonably good tuner for most things), I learned stuff from Dan and his book. Twenty Five years of doing it and this book still taught me things. I am very happy to have purchased this book and you will be too.

Quick solutions for difficult optimization problems

"Tell me something I don't already know", that's what crosses my mind every time I pick up a new performance, tuning book. If you're like me, 90% of the content in any DBA book in the store is 'old hat'.
This book is refreshing. It doesn't waste time going over all of the stuff you learned years ago.
Knowing how to read an execution plan or when to pick a hash join over a nested loop join is not what this book is about. There are plenty of books on the market that cover basic, vendor specific, query tuning. I personally have about 20 of these books on my bookshelf here at home. (Over the years I've worked on Sybase, SQL Server, Informix XPS, & Oracle.)
Here's the deal...
Anyone who has worked with really big systems will eventually run into an optimization problem that seems to be unsolvable. You can try histograms, compressed key indexes, partitioning, pre-joined indexes, and materialized views, but you still can't get the performance that's being requested. For a DBA, it can be a very frustrating dilemma. This is especially true when you know from the data volume that you should be able to get there.
The truth is, optimizers can't always get the right solution, even with correct statistics. There are some good technical reasons why this is true, but that's out of scope for my review. In any case, that's where this book comes to the rescue. I feel that it gives you some insight into the optimization problem and tells you how to correct the problems that your optimizer can't figure out.
This book is NOT for use on 95% of your queries. Most optimizers will pick the correct access plan if the DBA does his/her job correctly and collects the appropriate statistics.
In my experience, I get two types of problems that I have trouble getting the optimizer to solve:
#1. Joining together a large number (8-14) of tables. At least 1 or 2 of the tables have over 30G of real data. By `real data', I mean that 30G of data is actually populated.
#2. Making high transaction queries read the fewest amount of buffers in order to get rid of latching problems.
After I read the first few diagramming chapters of this book, I thought I'd give it a try on a problem that was recently solved at work. I was surprised. It worked, and even with my clumsiness with the method, it only took me about 2 hours to get a solution. It took us about 3 days at work. Our trial and error solution was slightly better, than what I came up with using the author's method. However, it was so close that had I used his method, I most certainly would have gone on to another problem. (The author's solution was strange because I would never have solved the join order the way that he did. His solution actually had me pick the largest table, out of 10, to drive the query. I thought this was odd because my test query had some very good filters on smaller tables.)
These were the results per execution:
Optimizer - 100K buffers.
Trial & Error - 1700 buffers.
Book method (basic graphing) - 2000 buffers.
If I had known about this book, I could have solved this problem in a few hours. Instead it took several DBA's, a few day's time to come up with a solution that was only marginally better.
Since this method appeared to work so well for OLTP, I went back and looked at a very large OLAP query that I had worked on last year. I and several developers had spent days trying to get it to run faster. Even with the author's method, I still couldn't make it better, but I was happy to see that the join order picked by the optimizer was almost identical to what I had calculated using the book.
I plan on studying this guide over and over until I've memorized this method. I don't think it will solve every problem, but I think it gives you an edge over using experience alone.
Before you purchase this book...
Keep in mind, that SQL tuning is fundamentally *not a simple problem*, so readers should not buy the book expecting an easy list of simple tips and tricks. (If the problem was easy, the optimizer likely would have got it right in the first place, and you wouldn't be tuning!) The correct solution to the problem is fairly complex, as complex as it *needs* to be.
Also, it's not noted anywhere, but I gathered that the author assumes that the reader will have basic high school Algebra skills, and will have taken a basic statistics course in order to fully understand the reasoning behind the explanations. Although, Algebra and statistical knowledge are probably not necessary to learn the tuning method presented. I state this because I told a good friend about this book, and his first question was, "Does it have a lot of math to go through?" So, if statistics is not your thing, don't worry. The author only presents enough information to give you a level of comfort that his method is based on mathematics. He doesn't require that you know "graph theory" or anything like that.
By the way, our change from 100K buffers per transaction to 1700 buffers, dropped the CPU utilization for the website that was running the OLTP query by about 70%. That was on a 16 CPU, Sun/Solaris box. So proper SQL tuning can save you a lot of $$$.

A Work of Genius

I have withdrawn my earlier review because I did not properly understand the importance of this book until the second reading. That is a difficult admission to make since my business is database performance tuning.

This book is about tuning SQL queries in a systematic and scientific manner. It is above all about determining the optimum order in which the query engine should access the tables involved. My quibble was that join order is only a part of the whole tuning problem and most of the time the query optimizer got it right anyway. While this is true, I see now that it misses the point.

The fact that the optimizer gets it right so often allows us to take join order for granted. But how do we know the optimizer got it right unless we know what the optimum join order is? That is what this book teaches, a methodology and an elegant system of notation that allows us to determine the optimum join order of the most complex query. As the author points out, the number of possible join orders increases factorially with the number of tables involved. An 8 table join has 40,320 possible join orders. That rules out trial and error for all but the simplest queries.

It turns out that analyzing and diagramming according to Tow's method gives you a deep architectural understanding of the query and the problems that face you. It gives you a plan to which you can apply the tools of the trade, indexes, code optimization, etc.

This is a book that will be on the shelf of serious performance tuning professionals for as long as SQL is the language of data manipulation.
