Even though this was a textbook that I had to purchase for class, I expected all of the entries to be completely objective in tone and words used, but many of the chapters could very clearly show that the writers were using personal inflections and persuasive speech. This is not appropriate for a book that is meant to educate individuals about the overview and important aspects of many religions.

Builds respect, not intellectual superiority complexes

I teach International Baccalaureate World Religions. The purpose of the course is to understand and build respect for people who believe things other than themselves. I found this volume to be perfect for that purpose, because most of the chapters are written from the perspective of the adherents of the religion. In other words, rather than other textbooks which only explain how non-adherents perceive particular religious beliefs (which does not actually give the adherents themselves voice), the internal logic of each religion is respectfully simplified and clarified in this textbook. There are a million sources of information doubting, impersonally analyzing, or criticizing each faith from an outsider's point of view. This analyzes faiths with respect, not using words like "myth" to describe deeply held beliefs. Perfect for building understanding rather than intellectual snobbery.

The Truth That Sets you Free

As the author says in the introduction, this book is just a "taste" of a fuller exposition of the topic in a much larger work, "Jesus After 2000 Years: What He Really Said and Did" which is over 700 pages. Obviously, in this short version, there is not going to be extensive, detailed analyses. Nevertheless, for the lay reader who is interested in the very basic ideas behind historical criticism, it's a good, fast, overview.

Of more interest, is Ludemann's account of what happened to him after years of research when he finally came to the unavoidable conclusion, that Christianity as we know it, was basically a fraud. The Confederation of Protestant Churches in Lower Saxony tried to have Ludemann dismissed from his position within the theological faculty of a major university. It seems that theological faculties in German universities are governed by TREATIES between the state and the different Christian groups!!! I find that astonishing. But then, probably something similar is true in the US since Princeton has a theological seminary. The problem here is the obvious, glaring contradiction between the claims for "scientific" academic theology and the necessity to be bound to a "confession of faith". In other words, in NO WAY is theology as taught at the university level even remotely scientific. Theologians make claims about things that need to be PROVED and that is NOT what they are doing at the university level which is where it should be done!

As it is, theology is rather ridiculous because it REQUIRES the sacrifice the intellect since it is inevitably based on revelation and must privilege its texts and the alleged authors of those texts. Ludemann points out "in their research and teaching, most of my colleagues have long since left the principles of the church behind them but (want to) attach themselves to this tradition by symbolic interpretation and other interpretative skills. Hardly one of them shares the eschatological presuppositions of the church's tradition, and very few expect, for example, the return of Christ in judgment. To keep quiet about this could similarly be described as a tactic."

This is a damning statement about theologians today: they KNOW there's something rotten in their field, but to keep their jobs, to keep the power of the church, they keep quiet. Obviously, Ludemann was too honest and sincere to play this game, unlike Bart Ehrman who folded to the pressure and wrote a ridiculous book about the "Historical Jesus". But that's another subject.

The main thing here is that, if the teaching of theology at the university level is to be supported by public funds, then it MUST devote itself to doing real, science-system based research, and MUST inform its students of the results of that research. Public institutions should NOT be used to "reveal and preach", leading another generation of the naive and gullible into servitude to ancient superstitions. What would happen if a group of physicists and mathematicians proved that the Big Bang never happened? Are they required to "believe" in it? Would they lose their jobs for writing books and papers about it? Obviously not though it is certain that even science follows trends and one is more likely to get published if supporting the current mainstream view. But when those paradigms begin to break down, science is able to correct itself; theology must be free to do the same. Theology must become scientific, it must stop evading the real issues and plastering over the cracks in the nonsense that has passed for religion the past 2000 years.

Thus, I recommend this book to the lay reader. If they wonder about the more technical details of how a text can be evaluated as being authentic or inauthentic, then I suggest they read "Jesus After 2000 Years: What He Really Said and Did". Additional good reads along the same line are Richard Pervo's "Dating Acts" and Tyson's "Marcion and Luke-Acts" and Robert Price's "The Case Against the Case for Christ". That should get your neurons firing and you can follow references from there!

After all, it is KNOWING THE TRUTH that sets one free.

A Great Introduction to a Close Reading of the New Testament

This book is aimed at the general reader and is intended to give the reader an introduction to critical analysis techniques as they apply to the purported sayings of Jesus. Ludemann divides the text into four sections: Authentic Saying of Jesus, Inauthentic Sayings of Jesus Authentic Acts of Jesus and Inauthentical Acts of Jesus. In all four sections, Ludemann shares the critical tools that shed light on the authenticity of the saying. While it is clear that there is no absolute final answer to whether a particular saying or act is authentic, Ludemann's tools are actually quite compelling and allow the reader to acquire the critical tools required to make his own assessment of a New Testament passage. For the disbeliever, this will reinforce one's belief that much of the New Testament is propaganda; for the believer it will allow the reader to see Jesus through a new perspective, free of the "spin" of the early Christian church.
Because this book teaches you some of the elementary skills of the Bible academic, I found this book to be surprisingly thought-provoking. This will enable you to read the New Testament and form your own judgment about the legitimacy of the events and sayings recorded there.
I suppose I have made this book sound heavy and taxing, but it is an easy read, leaving you wanted to take on Ludemanns volumns aimed at a more academic audience.
Well worth picking up!

Faulty Premise - But Interesting Read

The basic premise of this book is, "If something in the gospel record addresses any concern of the early church, it must be rejected as inauthentic." The book takes off from there, jettisoning much of the material in the four gospels.

While it is true that the four evangelists wrote their books to address certain peoples with certain needs, it does not mean that they were deliberately trying to deceive their disciples by contriving false stories of what Jesus said and did. Also, just because something written in, say, 1890 addresses an issue that faces a certain group of people in, say, 2002, it doesn't automatically invalidate the work of 1890. It just means that perhaps the author had enough foresight to know that certain problems would arise and that he wanted to address those problems.

This book will be of interest to Christians who desire to expand their minds and who want to be aware of the reasoning processes of certain schools of theology...

Written by a pioneer of child analysis, and illustrated by fascinating clinical pictures drawn from childhood and adolescence, it discusses those adaptive measures by which painful and unwanted feeling-states are kept at bay or made more bearable.Anna Freud's arguments have a clarity and cogency reminiscent of her father's and the work is remarkable undated. Nothing stands still, but The Ego and the Mechanisms of Defense has unmistakably passed the test of time.

About the Author
Anna Freud is the youngest of Sigmund Freud's six children, and the only one to make her career in psychoanalysis, was born in Vienna on 3 December 1895. Starting her professional life as a schoolteacher, she became a member of the Vienna Psycho-Analytical Society in 1922. She maintained a lifelong interest in education, and her extensive contributions in this field were matched by those in all aspects of family law, pediatrics, as well as psychoanalytic psychology, normal and abnormal. Her work in Vienna was brought to an end by the Nazi occupation and she found sanctuary in London with her parents in 1938. Her father died in the following year, but Anna Freud maintained the tradition he began in her work as a member of the British Psycho-Analytical Society and as the founder of the Hampstead Child Therapy Clinic - now the Anna Freud Centre. Her services to psychoanalysis were recognized by the award of the CBE in 1967 and by a large number of honorary doctorates on both sides of the Atlantic, including as a gesture of reparation, an honorary MD from the University of Vienna. She died on 9 October 1982.

A must for understanding defense mechanisms

Although this volume was originally published in 1966, the insights and knowledge it contains are invaluable. Not only is Anna Freud's insights important, she writes in a style the is understandable. Although culture has changed in many ways since she wrote, the defense mechanisms which people used have not. Her volume provides the tools for understanding and working through those mechanisms. Since there are so many mechanisms at work with anxieties, if you are seeking ways of overcoming anxiety and understanding its workings, then this volume is a must have for your library.

I often find myself reading and re-reading her volume. Each time I read through it, behaviors which have puzzled me become understandable.

You can learn the basic principles of electronics in class or on your own with this terrific text

What a terrific introduction to electronics! The author explains electricity, the relevant formulae, the basic physics of electricity, electromagnetism and a lot more. The text requires no more than algebra and right angle trigonometry. I find the text clear, engaging, and quite understandable even without an instructor to help me.

Each chapter begins with an outline of what is going to be discussed, chapter objectives, key terms, application assignment, web materials, and an introduction. The text uses color very well, is richly illustrated, and is mindful of the student learning process. I like the way the author introduces a point, poses a problem that he then solves, and then asks you a similar problem to work on your own (with the answer provided at the end of the chapter). At the end of each chapter there is a bullet point summary, key terms with definitions, a self-test to check your understanding, and a section by section set of basic problems.

The text has 21 chapters divided into three parts. Part 1 discusses DC circuits (quantities & units, voltage - current & resistance, Ohm's Law - Energy & Power, Series Circuits, Parallel Circuits, Series Parallel Circuits, Magnetism & Electromagnetism). Part 2 discusses AC Circuits (Introduction to Alternating Current & Voltage, Capacitors, RC Circuits, Inductors, RL Circuits, RCLS Circuits & Resonance, Transformers, Time Response & Reactive Circuits). Part 3 discusses Devices (Diodes & Applications, Transistors & Applications, the Operational Amplifier, Basic Op-Amp Circuits, Special Purpose Op-Amp Circuits, Measurement - Conversion & Control).

There are also 5 appendices having a table of standard values, capacitor color coding & marking, Norton's Theorem & Millman's Theorem, Devices Data Sheets, Field-Programmable Analog Arrays (FPAAs). A glossary, index and answers to odd number questions are provided as well.

This text is, of course, usable in college or high school introductory courses to electronics, but it is also usable by interested general readers who want to build or fill in their understanding of the basic principles and applications of electronics.

This book needs more proofing.

I am currently using this book for an Electronics Course. In the first six chapters we have found many mistakes. Some of the questions in the review sections ask you to solve a circuitry problem but leave out vital information. Some of the answers in the back of the book are wrong. It was very disappointing considering the cost of the book.

Excellent Textbook for Intro Electronics

After a long search, I used this textbook twice to teach a 1-semester Analog Electronics course at the soph/jr level. I liked this text becasue it is VERY clear for students who find it very readable and organized in a logical sequence. If they miss a lecture, no problem, the book covers the material fantastically. It also has great pedagogical features which help students maintain a high-level view of electronics while learning details. And it combines typical electronics with practical information, applications, and debugging strategies.

Unfortunately, this book uses electron flow for current rather than conventional current flow. While this makes some sense, it also leads to lots of confusion when using any outside materials for the class. Secondly, it spends a lot of time on fairly simple stuff which the students should have already learned in Intro Physics so we did not really get into new subjects until around page 300!

That being said, I strongly recommend using this book to learn electronics on your own or as a text for students who may not have had Physics before.

What a great read!

Kelley Harvey really heats up the pages in this book.
Ronnie Fitz has written a book that teaches women how to catch and keep the man of her dreams. Her best friend Shayna has a slightly different view on things. In her eyes men cheat and she can prove it. It's her job to test these guys and see just how far they'll go. Jackson Tremaine is the incredibly hot host of a late night television show. When Ronnie and Shay appear on his show a bet is made that could easily make or break their careers. Can Ronnie use the techniques in her book to find and keep the man of her dreams? Or will all bets be off after she and Jackson spend an incredibly hot night together? I absolutely loved this book. The scorching hot scenes between Ronnie & Jackson kept me turning the pages until the very end. I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Yes Please

I have read a lot of this author's books and find them to be entertaining and this one is no different. I was cracking up at Ronnie's inner voice with some of the hilarious things that went through her mind. The side characters added a bit of humor to the story and all it all it was a very entertaining book with some steamy goodness. I will be stalking her page for Shayna's story. Overall fun read and as always I look forward to more books from this author.

This story was so much fun to read. The main characters, Ronnie and Jackson, make a bet when she's on his late night television talk show, she's appearing on to promote her new book. The funny thing is the two of them are attracted to one another even with the bet, he's a confirmed bachelor to her single and looking status. There are some rather funny scenes in this book that made me chuckle. I especially LOVED the bird and it's comments. (Now you HAVE to read it just to see WTH I'm talking about)

Computational geometry as an area of research in its own right emerged in the early seventies of this century. Right from the beginning, it was obvious that strong connections of various kinds exist to questions studied in the considerably older field of combinatorial geometry. For example, the combinatorial structure of a geometric problem usually decides which algorithmic method solves the problem most efficiently. Furthermore, the analysis of an algorithm often requires a great deal of combinatorial knowledge. As it turns out, however, the connection between the two research areas commonly referred to as computa tional geometry and combinatorial geometry is not as lop-sided as it appears. Indeed, the interest in computational issues in geometry gives a new and con structive direction to the combinatorial study of geometry. It is the intention of this book to demonstrate that computational and com binatorial investigations in geometry are doomed to profit from each other. To reach this goal, I designed this book to consist of three parts, acorn binatorial part, a computational part, and one that presents applications of the results of the first two parts. The choice of the topics covered in this book was guided by my attempt to describe the most fundamental algorithms in computational geometry that have an interesting combinatorial structure. In this early stage geometric transforms played an important role as they reveal connections between seemingly unrelated problems and thus help to structure the field.
