Can't wait to see this on the stage
By steve ryan
Reading this play brought my right back to 1969 sitting two feet away from my parents' black and white TV. I was holding my breath through the whole landing and was doing the same with this play. Well done!

A New Spin On The First Moon Landing
By Honor Murphy
Were you born after the first moon landing? Think you missed out on the most important “discovery” in the 20th Century? Then, read Apollo 11 by Zmuda. This play accurately recounts all the excitements, anxieties, mishaps, and joyful times that happened during the first moon landing. Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong, Collins, and Houston are the only characters in this play and never exit the stage (a very ingenuous use of staging on Zmuda's part) but they never fatigue the audience. Instead, the scenes are filled with vivid dialogue, which is embellished with loads of science vocabulary. In fact, the dialogue represents the exact words once spoken from these brave men, including Houston. The conversations between Houston and the astronauts make this play. With so much confusion between Texas and space, the audience can't help feeling befuddled with the astronauts.
What could go wrong in space? The answer is everything. From the men losing contact for long periods of time, Houston not knowing what to do about a broken fuse or practically anything, a BIC pen holding the fate of two men stuck on the moon, and Aldrin peeing his pants are just a few examples of nerve-racking, but sometimes hilarious encounters on Apollo 11 that Zmuda sets up flawlessly. Every transition to the next event goes down perfectly, and the audience can hardly tell that they have been sitting for an hour. It feels like two minutes.
Although short, Zmuda's debut play can educate anyone about the time, in 1969, when man first walked the moon. Anyone, any age, will feel a deep sense of admiration and pride for America by the last page. Apollo 11 provides a profound sense of accomplishment, as if your foot made the first imprint of mankind on the moon...

The Event of July 21, 1969 - Recreated. Incredible!
By Andrew Snow
As a kid born in the 90's, I always regretted missing out on the Apollo 11 moon landing. Throughout the years, I've been told numerous stories of the moon landing and the grand surge of American spirit surrounding the event, whether from the perspective of my Grandmother, who joyfully jumped and marched in celebration in a crowd on the streets of New York City, or the perspective of my father, who sat attentively in awe by his living room TV with the rest of his family. I've always regretted that I couldn't witness one of the most important events in American history regarding human achievement and technological advancement and experience the surge of excitement and spirit around the event.

With Zmuda's "Apollo 11", I can finally experience the 1969 moon landing first hand. The play's vivid descriptions of the mission and the dialogue of the characters (which is actual dialogue from the mission, taken from the transcript) allows me to live vicariously through the play. Zmuda's "Apollo 11" is the closest I'll get to living in the moment of July 20, 1969.

I recommend this book to whoever might want to learn about mission Apollo and experience the event itself for the first time, or for those older folks who want to reminisce back forty-four years ago and relive the experience. Zmuda's screenplay, with its great substance and vivid detail, has the ability and impact to recreate the moon landing and the event surrounding it all over again with each read through. I can't wait to see what a theatrical adaptation of the play could do to completely launch the event and fully implement the play for its greatest purpose.
