good reading

This story about the effects of the nazi occupation of a small town in France is told in the first person by a jewish boy, posing as a christian, sent by his parents from Paris to avoid almost certain capture by the German and French police. This boy and his trials are the substance of the novel and make for very good reading in my opinion. The issue of collaboration is explored and one sees that it is not all black and white as we might wish to think. For the non native French speaker the narrative does not pose too many problems.

Bien aime un livre agreable a lire, par contre il manquait des fois quelques mots dans quelque paragraphe comme si on les avaient oublies.

Choosing the background of the last world war has been overdone. The actual crime is lost in the meandering mind of the author. There are so many deaths---due to war time---that by the time you find out who killed Melanie one can easily think ( I did) one more killed enough....and nothing more!
