Wonderfully Uncomfortable
By Karen Wingoof
I'm having a really hard time deciding how to rate this book. It's not the kind of read that I can really think of in terms of "number of stars." I don't think it's a book meant for "liking" or "disliking" or rating.

*Christian Science Re-Explored* was wonderfully uncomfortable for me. I found myself questioning concepts I'd always just accepted as true. Margaret Laird's book "stirred the waters" of my thought and helped me re-think my beliefs about Christian Science, and look at it in a new way. And that's not a bad thing. I can't say that I accept as "true" everything Laird writes - but I get the sense that Laird would have been really disappointed if I did. In fact, one of the big themes in her book was the idea that we should never just blindly accept what any "authority" tell us is the Truth - that individual freedom to explore new ideas, and question old and accepted ones, is something to be celebrated, not squelched. Laird writes: "...the man of imagination...does not regard another's point of view as needing either rejection or acceptance. He recognizes that dissent is often more creative, more stimulating to original thinking, than consent. This does not mean dissent from the standpoint of right or wrong, but dissent from the standpoint of a view of Reality other than one's own. Often a viewpoint that differs greatly from our own will do more to stoke the furnace of imagination than one with which we agree. The acceptance of another's point of view as right, or the rejection of it as wrong, would interfere with our own individual creativity."

I'm still processing the thoughts presented in *Christian Science Re-Explored* - the author's thoughts regarding The Bible, organized and institutionalized religion, Ecclesiasticism, Christianity, and the "technique" of "affirmation and denial" that some Christian Scientists use to experience healing were really interesting to me. Laird writes: "He who prays with a goal in mind is not being the prayer of understanding or unconditioned Love..." and "The religion that is Science disposes of the theory that man can grow in grace through prayer, worship, and self-sacrifice. Can you imagine Mind, Life, Principle, Truth needing to grow in grace or to sacrifice itself? Then why should man, whose existence is reflection, need to grow in grace or practice self- sacrifice?" I think she asks a really good question there.

Very advanced metaphysics
By Marak
I agree with another reviewer that this book is for advanced Christian Scientists only. Despite forty years in CS and familiarity with Joel Goldsmith’s books and eastern religions, I still find 'Christian Science Re-Explored' tough going. But it’s well worth the slog. Reading the book has helped my practice of CS enormously and given me new insights into Mary Baker Eddy’s writings. I find it reinforces and takes further many ideas from I’ve found in CS texts, Joel Goldsmith’s writings, and other scriptures, both eastern and western.

Eddy made many concessions to mainstream Christianity in her writings, partly to make them more palatable to mainstream Christians and partly because of her upbringing and social environment. Laird tosses aside these sacred cows, in particular, the idea of scriptural authority. Laying aside these weights can only help progress.

Laird develops in depth Eddy’s concept of ‘chemicalization’. Truth is not always experienced as the gentle, loving, protecting presence portrayed in CS periodicals. Truth attacks dualistic thinking in order to flush it out and destroy it. This is helpful for understanding the meaning of the statement 'there is no evil', in the face of evidence to the contrary. Joel Goldsmith also makes this point, though less emphatically.

I think 'Christian Science Re-Explored' is major leap forward in the area of Christian Science/ New Thought / Infinite Way — whatever you want to call it. I will be spending a lot more time in future studying this book and intend to purchase some of Laird’s other writings.

By V. D Hill
I honestly cannot give this book enough stars. It transformed my knowledge of Christian Science/Truth into a workable, practical understanding that I've been able to incorporate into my day to day living. It brings the sometimes lofty writings of Science and Health into plain view. I have been a life long (50 years) Christian Scientist and still am, I just have the pieces of the puzzle put together for me by reading this book. The author clearly loves Mary Baker Eddy and her contribution to man and somehow manages to expand on that. If you are ready to have your understanding of Christian Science developed more and put into a much more practical useful way then this is the book for you. We all may get to travel one day, you may fly and I may drive but we will reach our destination. This book is just another way of getting there.
